For more than 14 years, the Rho Tau Lambda Foundation has been committed to providing academic development and scholarships to close the education gap in Baltimore.

About the foundation

Rho Tau Lambda Foundation , Inc. is a nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organization serving communities across Baltimore City and county. Comprised of over 50 foundation members, we are on a mission to Educate, Engage and Empower our underserved communities and youth.


Our vision is to build greater social, economic and intellectual mobility within communities by:

  • Awarding  scholarship grants to worthy students for the pursuit of higher education.
  • Conducting community education programs which aid in the education and vocational improvement of the human condition.
  • Engaging in charitable activities for the improvement of life in the Baltimore & Washington, DC communities.


We make all of this possible by hosting fundraising events and through the generous donations of our RTL Society members.

Jewel  Scholarship

The Jewel Scholarship is named after seven (7) men who inspire RTL Foundation's mission and awarded to college bound African American High School Students across Baltimore City or County.


The scholarship is one small step towards closing the education opportunity gap by providing financial assistance to high school seniors that demonstrate leadership, academic excellence and community service.


Two (2) scholarships will be awarded in May 2022


Applications must be submitted by: April 15, 2022, 11:59 PM


Scholarship amount: $1,750

Jewel Scholarship Eligibility

  • Must be an African-American, graduating high school senior (2021-2022 school year)
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Submission of an unofficial high school transcript
  • All transcripts must be submitted using the grading policy/GPA scale currently used by their school
  • Student must reside and/or attend a high school in Baltimore City or Baltimore County
  • Acceptance letter from college/university  or vocational/trade school (copy must be enclosed with application)
  • Demonstrate community service


Scholarship applications and supporting documents are due by April 15, 2022


Awards will be announced in May 2022

Scholarship winners will be contacted using the information provided on their application.


Following notification of the scholarship award, the recipient(s) selected must provide proof of enrollment at a vocational/trade school, accredited college, or university by August 19, 2022, prior to the Fall 2022 or Spring 2023 academic term. Final disbursement of the award at that time.


Recipients will be asked to provide a letter of thanks to the Rho Tau Lambda Foundation Inc. and an update video during the semester the funds were distributed. We would like to know how these funds contributed to your educational goals.

Essay Prompt

Scholarship applicants must submit an online essay from one of the seven (7) topics listed below. Essays must be a minimum of 500 words,

  1. Why is education important to me?”
  2. How will you use your education to serve and improve your community where you currently reside?
  3. Who is a good doctor and why?
  4. What differentiates you from the hundreds of students who apply to our scholarship?
  5. What are your hopes for the future?
  6. How will this scholarship help you?
  7. Why do you want to study your major and/or pursue your career choice?

All scholarship applications must be submitted online by April 15, 2022, 11:59 PM.

Supporting documents must be emailed to rtlscholarship@rtlfoundation.org by April 15, 2022, 11:59 PM.

  • Two Letters of recommendation, one from a school official such as an administrator, guidance counselor, department chair, or academic advisor and one from a person in the community (letters from relatives are strictly prohibited). Must include typed two contact numbers, e-mail address, and full name.



Apply for the Jewel  Scholarship

Rho Tau Lambda Foundation, from 2013 through 2018, has awarded scholarships totaling more than $10,000 to college bound high school seniors for the continuation of their educational pursuits. Each student must achieve above a 2.5 cumulative grade point average to qualify for the award. 


Recipients of RTLF scholarship awards attend local and out of state colleges/universities which include

  • Morgan State University
  • Stevenson University
  • Towson University
  • University of Maryland
